The dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) represents counterfactual reasoning about action versus inaction, the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) represents counterfactual thoughts directed towards the self versus other and the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) represents upward versus downward counterfactual thinking.
