The strains (grown in LB medium) included those without (−tR1) or with (+tR1) the phage tR1 terminator upstream of the lacZ reporter gene and were, respectively: wild type, RS445 and GJ5147, and nusA, GJ10573 and GJ10572. Derivatives with vector, H-NSΔ64, and YdgT carried plasmids pLG339, pLG-H-NSΔ64, and pHYD2546, respectively.
