Confocal micrographs (60X) of nigral sections stained for TH illustrate cell morphology in an untreated group (A and B) as compared to a rotenone-treated group (E and F). Zoomed images show distinct morphological changes after rotenone administration in terms of shape, leading to elongation (C and D vs. G and H). Neuron morphologic features were measured using MetaMorph software. For cell shape analysis, a shape factor of 1 represents a circular object while a 0 value indicates a straight line (I). Although degenerating TH-immunoreactive neurons undergo changes in shape factor, quantification of area does not show any significant variations (J).
